Second 5G Open RAN deployment coming to Bath
- The city of Bath in the UK is launching a government funded Open RAN pilot scheme later this summer.
- This is the second Open RAN deployment in the city and follows the launch of Vodafone‘s, and the UK’s, first Open RAN deployment back in 2022.
- Telet, who put together the successful bid for £9,910,790 of government grants on behalf of its Western O-RAN Deployment (WORD) consortium, will manage the project which will have a total value of £14.5m.
- The pilot scheme itself is fully funded by a £773,132 government grant.

Huawei expected to take open RAN step to stay in Germany – from Light Reading
- Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone are working to pair new management software with Huawei’s radio access network as an alternative to its complete removal.
- To the dismay of Huawei‘s European rivals, Germany and its operators may just have given the world a template for dealing with the problematic Chinese vendor.
- It would be a step toward an open RAN, a telco push for complete interoperability between different RAN suppliers. Huawei, in public, is opposed to the whole idea.

Boldyn: Neutral host shared RAN ‘way ahead’ in Europe – from Fierce Network
- Neutral host RAN – for public and private uses – is spreading across Europe
- The UK already has a specification that enables open RAN radios to be shared by several MNOs on a private network
- SNS Telecom estimates that by 2027 as much of one fifth of all small cell deployments in carpeted enterprises will be multi-operator

White Paper: Enabling Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight Drones Operation over Open RAN 5G Networks with Slicing
Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight (BVLoS) drone operation has emerged as a prominent Internet-of-Robots enabler. From the abstract:
“In this work, we deploy a state-of-the-art 5G O-RAN open-source BVLoS operational system, report current limitations, and address them via advanced capabilities natively available in O-RAN: Slicing. Our proposed deployment minimizes trajectory errors due to 5G link congestion and keeps latency well below the 3GPP limits defined for BVLoS operation. Finally, we discuss the challenges ahead and the opportunities that 5G O-RAN-enabled networks may bring to BVLoS drone operation.”
